NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat has successfully conducted a sensitization and training workshop on the County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM) with stakeholders from Kilifi County in Mombasa County at the Mombasa Continental Hotel.

The County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM) process is a voluntary, governance assessment tool that mirrors the Continental African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and enables counties to identify and address challenges in their governance systems. Additionally, CPRM aims to enhance good governance, accountability, transparency, and participation among counties.

The workshop brought together the County Executive Committee members, Chief Officers and Directors and or Research Team. The training focused on sensitizing participants on the importance of the CPRM process in enhancing good governance, promoting prudent resource utilization, enhancing economic growth, and eradicating poverty. A team of research team was also trained on the CPRM tools.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Felkin K. Ndena, CECM Public Service, Special Programmes & Disaster Management, Devolution, Civic Education & Public Participation Kilifi County affirmed the importance of the CPRM process in enhancing the county’s governance architecture. Hon. Ndena emphasized that this process would be pivotal in fostering a symbiotic relationship between both the National and County government, ultimately resulting in a marked improvement in service delivery. Additionally, he reasserted Kilifi County’s unwavering commitment to upholding the tenets of transparency, accountability, and participation in all facets of its operations.

Consequently, Amb. Dr. Samori Okwiya, The Chief Executive Officer, NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat, noted that the CPRM process will help identify strengths and weaknesses, with the objective of advancing economic growth, sustainable advancement, and integration of the county economy. He further expressed his appreciation to Kilifi County Officials for the opportunity to embrace the CPRM initiative.

Primarily, Mr. Peter Kimemia, Director APRM & Governance emphasized the pivotal role that the County Peer Review Mechanism plays in promoting exemplary governance practices throughout the African continent. He explained that this mechanism offers an unprecedented opportunity for counties to showcase their accomplishments, gain insights from each other, enhance their governance frameworks, and spur economic development, thereby heralding a new era of prosperity and progress.

Through a successful implementation of the CPRM process, Kilifi County can showcase responsive governance and accountability to the rest of the country and continent, with active participation from government, civil society, and the general public, thus contributing to the delivery of quality services. The successful training workshop in Kilifi County is a step towards achieving this vision in Kenya.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for participants to use their acquired knowledge and skills to enhance the implementation of good governance principles by fostering accountability and transparency within the county.
