The NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat is conducting civic education and training workshop aimed at enhancing the capacity of county officials and research teams from Bomet, Homa-Bay, Nakuru, Kajiado, Narok, Kajiado and Kisii counties on the County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM)
Mr. Peter Kimemia, Director APRM & Governance leading civic education and training on CPRM
This workshop follows the successful conclusion of the pilot phase of the CPRM which involved 12 counties (Busia, Vihiga, Kakamega, Machakos, Siaya, Trans-Nzoia, Makueni, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Mombasa, Nyeri and Bungoma). The pilot phase culminated the inaugural National Summit of the County Peer Review Mechanism held in August 2024, highlighting the importance of citizen involvement in governance processes.
Consequently, this workshop is part of a broader initiative aimed at building capacity-building of the county research teams and fostering democratic engagement between citizens and their government. All these activities are aimed at cultivating a culture of accountability and transparency in county governance.
Participants exchanging ideas on CPRM during the workshop
The Secretariat provides a vital platform for facilitating democratic dialogue, enabling citizens to voice their concerns and hold their governments accountable. As Mr. Peter Kimemia Director, APRM & Governance noted during the workshop.
“This initiative not only strengthens the capacity of local governance but also offers Kenyans a platform for dialogue and accountability where governance issues are addressed, and counties’ strengths and challenges identified.”
To date, the Secretariat has conducted civic education and training on CPRM in Uasin Gishu, Turkana, West Pokot, Lamu, Kwale, and Taita Taveta counties in preparation for the second CPRM summit. As the training progresses, participants will acquire valuable insights into best practices for implementing the CPRM, leading to improved service delivery and enhanced governance in their respective counties.
