The NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat is mandated to coordinate implementation and reporting of AU agenda 2063 in Kenya. In a significant step towards enhancing the integration of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 in counties, the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat convened a capacity-building session today, October 3, 2024, for officials of the County Government of Kilifi.

The session was led by Director NEPAD Programmes, Dr. Rose Kitur, in collaboration with the State Department for Economic Planning.
The session is part of the Secretariat’s ongoing efforts to disseminate the AU Agenda 2063 across Kenya. Last year, a survey conducted by the Secretariat revealed low awareness of the agenda. This highlights the necessity for further education and outreach, prompting the Secretariat to initiate dissemination and capacity-building initiatives specifically in Kenya.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Kitur emphasized the critical role of county governments in realizing the objectives of Agenda 2063, referencing a statement by President William Samoei Ruto at the 2023 devolution conference. “County governments represent the final frontier in the execution of Agenda 2063,” Dr. Kitur mentioned, underlining the importance of local engagement in national development strategies.

During the session, discussions focused on aligning the principles of Agenda 2063 with Kilifi County’s development plans. The Secretariat engaged county officials, including ,Chief Officers, and Directors, in a dialogue on the integration of Agenda 2063 into county programs.

Mr. Richard Lwambi, the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at the County Secretary’s office, Kilifi County expressed appreciation for the initiative, acknowledging the need for enhanced awareness and capacity to effectively incorporate the agenda into the county’s strategic framework.
“The knowledge gained today will significantly aid us in ensuring that our development efforts resonate with the broader objectives of the African Union,” he noted.

The dissemination and capacity building exercise undertaken by the NEPAD/APRM Kenya aims to enhance awareness and encourage proactive engagement among stakeholders, ensuring that Kenya remains aligned with the continent’s vision for sustainable development, peace, and prosperity by 2063.
