The alignment of African Union’s Agenda 2063 with local county development plans is vital for ensuring the effective implementation of the continent’s development programmes. This was stated by the Director NEPAD Programmes, Dr. Rose Kitur, during the dissemination and capacity-building exercise on AU Agenda 2063 for Laikipia, Murang’a, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Embu, Kericho, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, and Baringo counties.

The training was officially opened by the Chief Executive Officer, NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat, Amb. Dr. Samori Okwiya who emphasised the link between sustainable development and good governance. He highlighted that  that sustainable development spanning economic, social and environmental dimensions is a foundational element for ensuring that governance structures remain accountable, transparent and effective.

The training which brought together Directors from the aforementioned counties focused on the creation of awareness on the Agenda 2063 and empowering county governments with the tools and knowledge necessary to integrate the goals, aspirations, and priority areas of Agenda 2063 into their County Plans and policies.Additionally, special attention was given to the role of counties in advancing the Agenda’s focus on devolved functions and providing resources for the same.

During the training, Dr. Kitur emphasized the importance of domesticating Agenda 2063, pointing out that achieving the continental goals requires the active participation of county governments. She noted; “The integration of Agenda 2063 into county development plans ensures that the aspirations and goals of the African Union resonate at the grassroots level”

The dissemination and capacity-building exercise is part of efforts by the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat to promote awareness and deepen understanding of the Agenda 2063 framework among stakeholders.

The participants expressed optimism about the future of the counties development, noting that the capacity-building sessions had equipped them with the necessary tools to effectively contribute to Kenya’s role in advancing Agenda 2063.
