Africities is the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) of Africa’s flagship pan-African event that is held every three years in one of the five regions of Africa. The 9th edition of the summit is set to take place in Kisumu County, Kenya from 17th – 21st May 2022, under the theme, ‘the role of intermediary Cities of Africa in the Implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the Africa Union Agenda 2063’.

H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to officially open the summit with discussions of devolution and governance taking Center stage.

Speaking today during a press conference at the Mamboleo Show-ground where the summit will begin tomorrow, Governor Anyang’ Nyongo’ affirmed that the Summit is a great opportunity for Kenya to showcase Devolution, Decentralisation in Africa and Urban Development.

Further, Governor Nyongo’ noted that the summit hopes to discuss Agenda’s 2030 and 2063 which call for urgent need to develop resilient and sustainable urbanisation in Africa, cognisant of the fact that by 2050, the bulk of African Population will be living in cities and majority of the city dwellers will settle in intermediary cities.

Kisumu is the first intermediary city to host the Summit.

The governor was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary for Transport Mr. James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Eugene Wamalwa Deputy Governor Kisumu County, Mathew Ochieng’ among other government officials.
